Skype for Facebook? Not everyone agrees it's a done deal
Is Skype video chat really coming to Facebook? We'll have to wait a couple of more days--Facebook says it hast an "awesome" announcement scheduled for Thursday--to find out if the world's most popular social network will finally have Skype truly integrated with it, but rumors are bouncing all over the Internet that a deeper connection between Facebook and Skype's VoIP service is in the works.
Will Facebook users need to download the Skype client? Or, as TechCrunch reports, will it be an in-browser experience?
Landing a deal to put Skype deep into Facebook, with its 750 million users, would be a coup for Skype, which has 170 million users of its own.
But, not everyone believes a Skype integration is coming.
ConceivablyTech posits that the rumor is a long shot at best, pointing out that there already are a number of video and audio chat services available for Facebook and that none of them have had much success.
As CT points out, Vroom saw a lot of press during its launch last year but so far has only 2,668 monthly active users on Facebook. Voice Chat for Facebook has fewer that 2,000 users, and Talkr has 2,100. Audio chat service Mingleverse has some 318,000 users, the only service that appears to have taken root with Facebook users.
A deal between the two makes sense, especially since Microsoft, which is in the process of acquiring Skype for $8.5 billion, has a vested interest in Facebook.
It also gives Microsoft a fighting chance against Google, which is in the process of rolling out Google+ and its Hangouts video conferencing function, which already is drawing rave reviews.
