Skype, Logitech, Panasonic partner for video calling on TVs

VoIP specialist Skype is teaming up with Panasonic and Logitech (NASDAQ:LOGI) to give consumers yet another video calling option.

Logitech is launching Logitech TV Cam for Skype, a pure plug-and-play TV camera that enables consumers to use their 2011 Panasonic Viera Connect TVs to make and receive high-definition (up to 720p) video calls, with no computer or software download required (Skype already is loaded onto the TV set). Logitech recommends consumers have at least 1 Mbps upload and download speed for a smooth connection.

"We believe making a video call to loved ones should be easy and natural," said Joerg Tewes, vice president and general manager of Logitech's consumer video division. "We welcomed the opportunity to work closely with respected brands such as Panasonic and Skype to make it possible for more people in more households to connect with one another from the comfort of their living room."

The Logitech TV Cam for Skype is expected to be available for 2011 Panasonic VIERA Connect-enabled VIERA HDTVs beginning this month for a suggested retail price of $149.99 on Panasonic's VIERA Connect Market.
