Skype set for iPad debut

Tools

Skype reportedly is set to release a version of its VoIP and video chat application for the Apple iPad tomorrow on iTunes. The VoIP app can be used over the first-generation iPad, but the two-way video chat capability is aimed at the recently-released iPad 2. It takes advantage of the iPad 2's dual camera capability to allow video callers to see themselves picture-in-picture alongside the larger video image of the called party.

The move is not exactly a surprise, but it could be a significant salvo in the battle between video calling apps like Skype and Apple's Facetime, as well as expected newcomers like Google. Skype has the advantage of being a global leader in the space, and, in terms of competing with Apple's video VoIP app, it also has the advantage of being an open, multi-platform app. One thing is for certain, the iPad is the perfect device for video chat, and the success of Skype on the iPad will go a long way in determining how the video chat market face-off (pun intended) plays out.
