Small companies still influencing VoIP in 2008

There's no question that last year was a time of change in the VoIP industry. Now that we've entered a new year, what sort of climate should we be looking for in 2008?

Long distance will remain important, but will likely continue to evolve as just one of the factors with an impact on companies' willingness to make the move to VoIP. This will be accompanied by an increase in the installation of hybrid IP-PBXs as an alternative to IP-only central exchanges.

As you're looking around, pay particular attention to news from the smaller companies. VoIP is a technology that's still new enough for small startups to have a significant impact on the direction of products and market behavior. Smaller companies may well hold the key to technology breakthroughs that will help other small companies act like (and be perceived as) much larger companies. There's more--but, then again, the year is still very young.
