SPOTLIGHT: 3Q cable beating telco in subs 2-to-1

Tools

With most public phone and cable companies reporting 3Q results, cable companies have signed up 64 percent of new broadband subscribers last quarter, while telcos only snapped up 36 percent, reports Silicon Valley Insider.

Cable gets props for having faster broadband offerings than existing DSL services and attracting millions of digital phone subscribers for triple-play deals.  If you're going to go for the TV and Internet service, digital phone is an easy win.

However, things are slowly looking up for telcos.  FiOS and U-Verse enable Verizon and AT&T to keep existing subscribers and grab existing cable customers. There's also some interesting triangulation going on with AT&T offering free WiFi service and Cablevision engaging in its own WiFi build.
