SPOTLIGHT: Bangladesh VoIP bootlegger shut down

Tools

The Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission shut down ISP Arena Info Tech on Wednesday on charges of illegal VoIP operations.

BRTC has sealed the ISP's offices and charged the company with engaging in illegal call termination services and license conditions violations. A probe found the ISP had been using most of its licensed 14 Mbps bandwidth to operate the unlicensed VoIP service from one of its offices.

Bangladesh authorities have been cracking down on unlicensed/illegal VoIP providers over the past year, since it is costing the government millions of dollars in termination fees. In Nov. 2008, the authorities shut down one ISP and seized equipment.
