T-Mobile expands business WiFi calling to all Android phones

Tools

Big doings for Android users this week. First Skype expanded to mobile OS and now we've got T-Mobile offering free WiFi calling on all their Android devices.

T-Mobile originally launched their WiFi calling for business users in 2007, offering calls on certain Blackberry and Nokia phones. The company estimates it serves about 40 million WiFi calls per month, and no doubt that number will grow further as the service expands to newer Android phones. The service will launch on the T-Mobile myTouch, MOTOBLUR, and Motorola DEFY.

The WiFi calling allows business users to reduce call minute usage domestically and internationally as well as provide increased productivity by allowing employees to use their one handset as their device of choice.

"T-Mobile's expansion of WiFi Calling to Android smartphones is an excellent innovation, and part of our ongoing initiatives on behalf of our customers to enhance indoor coverage," said Torrie Dorrell, vice president, connected family products and services, T-Mobile USA in the release. "This new execution of WiFi Calling technology helps us ensure that our customers' Android-powered smartphones can keep them connected to the important people in their lives where they work, live or play."
