Top VoIP regulatory trends for 2008

Tools

Laws and regulations will have a significant impact on the VoIP market in 2008, with particular effects likely to be felt in mobility, consumer VoIP, and taxation. The way individual companies respond to the regulations to come will determine, in many cases, whether their VoIP installations will have the benefits expected when they were deployed.

Mobile VoIP is an area growing so rapidly that it's almost certain to draw the interest of regulators in the near future. VoIP over 3G, the coming 700 MHz spectrum auction, and election-year changes in the makeup of the FCC will all be reflected in the regulations to come for this new and quickly-expanding technology.

They will not necessarily all be regulatory in nature, but changes are almost certain in consumer VoIP as eBay tries to recover value from its purchase of Skype and the retail VoIP market recovers on the basis of Vonage resolving the pending lawsuits against it.
