University installs 8,000 VoIP phones
The University at Buffalo, a 262-year-old institution of learning in Upstate New York with 27,000 students and a $926 million operating budget, is adopting VoIP. The project involves separate phone systems in at least 80 buildings and comprises around 8,000 phones.
The migration away from Verizon Centrex Service and other systems is part of the school's UB 2020 Information Technology Transition. So far, about 900 Cisco VoIP phones have been installed, a University official told The Spectrum, UB's campus newspaper.
The project was launched last year, but got systematically under way in the second quarter of this year. The transition is scheduled to run through early 2010.
