VoIP Development in Europe vs. U.S.

Tools

TeleGeography projects the number of U.S. consumer VoIP subscribers will reach 15.2 million by the end of this year and 23.3 million by the end of 2011, with cable operators leading the way. Europe is nonetheless pulling ahead in terms of penetration, which is expected to be twice that of the United States in four years. TeleGeography sites several reasons for this—“freer access to incumbents’ local copper loops, more aggressive competition and pricing, and the active participation of incumbent operators.” Incumbent phone companies in Europe account for 26 percent of VoIP subs.
