VoIP encryption comes to Borderware
Phil Zimmerman got in a world of legal trouble when he invented the free PGP data encryption program, but courts ultimately said that Americans had the right to have and use it. Americans responded by, well, not caring very much. Now Zimmerman is responding to CALEA by releasing Zfone, encryption software that scrambles VoIP calls from end to end. (CALEA, if you tuned in late, is a federal law that requires telcos to allow law enforcement to eavesdrop; courts are now saying that VoIP carriers need to comply, too.) Zimmerman says that Zfone is designed to keep anyone--not just governments--from eavesdropping on a non-secure connection. Borderware announced this week that it has licensed Zfone on its SIPassure product. The FBI, however, is just one step behind; it has reportedly drafted legislation to force networking companies to build in back doors for surveillance.
