VoIP lets hotels charge extra for true broadband
Telecom has long been an important profit center for hotels, but perhaps nothing has driven road warriors' adoption of cell phones as much as the 45 percent phone surcharge or the $1 local call. Buried somewhere in the middle of this article about hotel management is the nugget that VoIP-based hotel telecom systems can not only save properties money, but can allow them to institute bandwidth charges for Internet access. Need only to check e-mail or browse the Web? That's cheap. But if you've want access to your Slingbox or use Skype? That'll be a lot more money, please.
