VoIP Takes Initial Steps to Protect Intellectual Property
ORLANDO, Fla. - VoIP, Inc. announced today that it has taken initial steps to protect the intellectual property surrounding its web-based calling services. The Company has sent letters to parties that VoIP believes is currently infringing on its intellectual property.
VoIP was granted U.S. Patent 6,501,837, covering a method for making a telephone call between two parties, and a method for making a telephone call utilizing a call-back feature from an intermediate point. "With the rapid emergence of web-based calling services, including Click-To-Call, Virtual and PIN based Internet Calling Cards, we have become increasingly aware of companies that are using our technology in Web-based applications," said Shawn Lewis, VoIP, Inc. chief technology officer. "While several large companies have recently entered into commercial agreements with us to deploy our network or technology, there are many others that are using our technology without compensating us. Due to the substantial investment we have made to develop the technology, and the significant commercial applications it is currently being deployed in, the Company believes now is the time to receive compensation for these valuable assets. We hope that we will be able to work with these parties on an amicable basis to protect our rights."
Industry sources estimate that within the next five years, Click-To-Call services for advertising may generate annual revenue of approximately $6.5 billion annually. Virtual calling card services, utilizing IP-based services, are also growing rapidly as companies like Sprint, MCI, IDT and others generate efficiencies through the Internet.
