VON: Converged Windows Mobile WiFi cell phone
The odds are pretty good that you've never heard of Paragon Wireless. It's one of those under-the-radar companies that quietly builds the technology that better-known companies deploy in products. But Paragon is setting off something of a bomb here: a candy-bar style handset that runs Windows Mobile 5.4.0, does wireless VoIP and quad-mode GSM, with clean handoffs from WiFi net to cellular. It's not commercially available--Paragon's customers are OEMs and ODMs--and company president Ilkka Pouttu suggested to FierceVoIP that the phone may first appear in Europe, where unlocked GSM phones are commonplace. But keep an eye out for the Hipi 2200 in the fourth quarter. Of course, small matters like customer ownership, billing and feature appearance haven't been resolved yet. But Paragon just designs the technology, and someone else will build the handset. The other stuff? That's your problem.
