Vonage adds traffic, weather services

Tools

Vonage is either planning for wireless VoIP or isn't thinking very clearly about its market. The carrier has announced two free subscriber services familiar to radio listeners: traffic and weather. By dialing 700-WEATHER from any Vonage phone and punching in a 5-digit ZIP code, customers will have a local weather forecast machine-read to them. By dialing 511, customers will be given a traffic report based on their registered 911 location. What does this have to do with wVoIP? People tend to need traffic and weather information when they're in their cars; unless there's a hotspot or mobile data connection, that wouldn't do Vonage customers much good. Even then, it's tough to beat good old AM radio for those services.
