Was Sprint forced into WiMAX?
VoIPNews has an extremely interesting analysis of Sprint Nextel's adoption of WiMAX for its wireless IMS strategy. The article suggests that Sprint was more or less forced into WiMAX because of Verizon's dominance in CDMA. Qualcomm, which owns CDMA, would always put Verizon's needs first, the article argues, forever putting Sprint two years behind Verizon had the smaller carrier stayed with that technology. Even more interesting, the analysis suggests that Sprint has been in constant touch with its cable partners, with whom it competes but upon whom it will rely for video content. It's interesting thinking that will have to become commonplace in a converged world.
