Where's the VoIP in TalkPlus?

Tools

We wrote last week about TalkPlus, a company that lets you have multiple "virtual numbers" on your cell phone, allowing you to separate your business and personal calls on a single handset and even giving you an international presence. There's an interesting analysis of the company's service on VoIP News, which discovers that very little of the TalkPlus infrastructure has anything at all to do with VoIP. Indeed, the only part of the process that's IP-based are the servers that move the calls from one virtual number to another; other than that, calls move on the PSTN or the cellular network. Why build a whole new infrastructure, TalkPlus' management says, when the one that's there is better than perfectly serviceable?
