World VoIP sub count at 40M
Whether these numbers make you happy or not may depend on whether you're a glass-half-full or glass-half-empty kind of person. Market analysts Point Topic say there are twice as many VoIP subscribers around the world as there were last year, but that the number is still about 40 million. More than 6.5 million of them are in France, where about a quarter of all fixed-line calls use VoIP, and 13.75 million subscribers are in Japan. The U.S. has 8.9 million, and Germany counted 3.5 million. The information Point Topic made available didn't say, but these figures presumably counted services like Vonage and cable VoIP, and didn't include, for instance, Skype.
