Worm attacks Skype

Tools

Skype is now plagued by a worm, according to reports. The deleterious code is being spread through instant message syntax that sends a message to Skype Windows users directing them to click on what appears to be a .jpg file. The click unleashes the worm.

Skype is telling users to be on the lookout and not to click on .jpg files while it works with software security firms on updates to stop the worm.

Skype, the VoIP service owned by eBay, has had more than its share of ups and downs over the past couple of months. A two-day outage in late August was followed by a deal in which Wal-Mart agreed to sell Skype's service. Then a Skypper was busted in London for piggybacking, and last week, the service was used in a successful test of airborne VoIP. Wild swings of circumstance can only be expected for what is actually the world's largest VoIP service, with around 200 million registered users and 9 million or so actively using it simultaneously. Skype continues to break ground, even when they would obviously rather not.
