XO expands wholesale IP play
XO Communications is expanding its base of Acme Packet session border controllers to help support its wholesale VoIP customers. XO runs a large fiber-based business IP network. It entered the wholesale market for U.S providers in 2005 and offers providers a single connection point for IP connectivity. This enables service providers to manage traffic on a national basis and to enter markets rapidly.
XO was an early adopter of SIP-based services. The Northern Virginian company has grown rapidly as carriers and large enterprise evolve to IP-based communications and demand for SIP increases. XO now boasts nearly $1.5 billion in revenue and its successful focus on provider and business markets contrasts with the struggle retail VoIP operators have had achieving profitability.
Acme Packet's SBCs are used to facilitate interoperability between peering networks and to provide protection of XO's VoIP infrastructure. The SBCs enable network companies like XO to maximize their service reach and revenue potential by normalizing signaling protocols at the interconnect border.Â
